Meet Ernesto
Every day, Ernesto brings to work his tools of imagining what is possible and finding solutions to make it happen. He learned to do that as a child, raised in a poor but loving family in central Mexico. Doors might not have opened easily on his path, but his stubborn determination would not be obstructed.
Ernesto’s nonstop drive and inspiration is rooted in his childhood, where being smart meant getting ahead, and where being stubborn provided the perseverance to overcome the lack of opportunities. He created opportunities for himself while working in restaurant kitchens although armed with an architecture degree. With humility, patience, and hard work he went from the back of the restaurant to center stage earning a Ph.D. from Arizona State University in Environmental Design and Planning.
Ernesto has spearheaded initiatives to assess the health impacts of community development including gentrification, access to public transportation, and affordable housing, and helped create the Stardust Center for Affordable Homes and the Family. Those assessments cemented Ernesto’s commitment to finding solutions, leading to his work to help families access the critical ingredients they need to achieve their goals: a stable, affordable home, a healthy family life that allows youth to learn and grow, opportunities for economic success, and access to affordable health care and healthy neighborhoods. His work as an affordable housing developer is intertwined with delivering a tapestry of solutions that will build the layers necessary to achieve healthy communities with healthy families.
In his free time, you will find Ernesto designing a carpentry project or home repair, getting ready for an amazing fishing camping trip with the family, or kicking back with a glass of wine and even a good argument that will inevitably lead to more dreaming about how we tackle the systemic challenges facing our communities.
